Angelo Ippolito
Color as Light
Painter Angelo Ippolito (1922-2001) was celebrated for his “brilliant color” (Fair eld Porter) and “joyous lyricism” (Dore Ashton), but he was also partly responsible for a bridge between the Abstract Expressionists of the New York School and the art of midcoast Maine. Ippolito was a driving force behind the rst artist-run downtown gallery, the Tanager, created as an alternative to New York’s Europe-oriented uptown galleries and museums. The Tanager Gallery gave now-famous artists such as Alfred Jensen and Jasper Johns their rst shows. Tanager members included Lois Dodd
and Alex Katz, who later brought the lessons of abstract expressionism and pop art back to Maine’s art scene.
Ippolito’s own work was renowned for its lyrical color, light, and compositional rigor. His paintings are now featured in the collections of New York’s MoMA, Whitney, and Metropolitan museums
