Barbara Brady Artist Statement
Painting is how I process life, moving beyond written words and spoken ideas.

It is a vehicle in which to filter or distill the world and those experiences that can either bring comfort, or alarm.

My hope is that the viewer will see the true character of each painting, its origin, its chapters, its existence.
I received a B.F.A. from Rosemont College and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia. My work has appeared in solo and National group exhibitions and is held in private and corporate collections internationally.

Barbara Brady

For 25 years the landscape has been the focus of my work. Seven of those years was spent painting in Los Angeles and along the coast of California. I now reside in Maine, surrounded by rustic wilderness.
The winter of 2005-06, marked a turning point - a new way of seeing. Once I allowed myself to be liberated from direct observation, I was no longer satisfied with ordinary vision. I began to express elements from nature spontaneously. I paint who I am, what I am feeling and draw from a vast array of perceptions and experiences. I'm more interested in the essence of nature, its vitality of spirit and its drama.
The process of creative investigation and experimentation has resulted in intensified color and gestural brushwork that has brought fluidity and movement to my paintings. The surface of the painting-thick and thin, light and dark, matt and gloss, is also an important factor. There is an energy to my work, a spiritual projection of natural forces.
The work on this web site is representative of this new body of work created since 2006.
My work is held in private collections on the east and west coasts. I'm represented by
Gallery 170, Damariscotta, ME; Pfenninger Gallery, Lancaster, PA; and Flanagan Fine Arts, Portland, ME.

Statement
My work is derived from nature's diversity, complexity and temperament. My paintings are about color and energy, images drawn from an emotional response. They are raw, not interested in detail, but broken down into simple gestures of color.
